Three quick questions
Your answers will personalise this vault — adding the documents most relevant to your specific situation.
Your personalised vault is ready
Legal note: Every person is legally entitled to their own identity documents regardless of marital status or immigration situation. Withholding a passport, birth certificate, or national ID is a criminal offence under coercive control legislation in the UK (Serious Crime Act 2015), a form of abuse recognised in US family courts, and equivalent laws in Canada and Australia. You do not need your partner's permission to obtain replacement documents.
My identity was never theirs to keep.
Legal note: Courts require these documents as evidence in divorce, custody, financial settlement, and protective order proceedings. Missing documents can delay proceedings significantly. Legal aid offices can help you obtain copies of court-filed documents even if you were not originally provided them. Police incident reports can be requested directly from the issuing police department — you are entitled to copies of any report you filed.
Legal note: In most jurisdictions, you are legally entitled to full disclosure of all financial records during divorce or separation proceedings — including accounts, investments, and pensions held solely in your partner's name. Concealing assets is contempt of court. A "Form E" (UK), financial affidavit (US), or equivalent is legally required from both parties. Use the Financial Checklist for deep guidance on these documents.
I am entitled to know what we built together.
Legal note: Property acquired during a marriage or long-term partnership is generally considered jointly owned in most jurisdictions, regardless of whose name is on the title. You are legally entitled to a full accounting of all shared assets. Removing or hiding assets before legal proceedings is contempt of court and can severely damage the other party's case.
Legal note: Medical records documenting injuries consistent with abuse carry significant legal weight in both criminal and civil proceedings. Courts accept digital evidence — screenshots must show timestamps and sender details. In the US, medical records can be requested under HIPAA. In the UK, under the Data Protection Act 2018. You are legally entitled to your own medical history. An incident log with dates, descriptions, and witnesses is admissible evidence in most jurisdictions.
What happened to me is real. And the record of it belongs to me.
Where to Store Your Documents
Gathering the documents is only half the task. Where you keep them determines whether they stay safe.
A family member, close friend, or colleague. Someone they have no access to. Physical copies or digital files stored on their device.
A new Google Drive, Dropbox, or iCloud account created on a device they do not have access to. Not a shared account. Not the family account.
Many domestic violence organisations will securely hold copies of your documents on your behalf. Ask them directly.
At a bank they have no association with. In your name only. One they cannot access without your presence and your key.
If they know your Apple ID or Google password — or share a family plan — they can see everything you upload. Use a completely separate account.
Any device they have access to, or any location inside the home, is not safe. Do not keep the only copy somewhere they can find or destroy it.
Take photographs as a backup
If you cannot physically take a document, photograph every page on your phone. Email those photos to a private email account they do not know about. Even a photo of a document has been accepted as evidence in court proceedings.
